ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) A wave of relief is on the horizon for inflation-stricken citizens as the government plans to grant a major benefit worth Rs51.49 billion to electricity consumers.

In this regard, power distribution companies have submitted a request to National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) under the third quarter adjustment, with a hearing scheduled for April 29.

According to the request made by power distribution companies, the largest portion of the relief—amounting to Rs47.12 billion—will come from a reduction in capacity payments.

Additionally, consumers are expected to benefit from Rs2.04 billion due to a decrease in transmission and distribution losses.

Moreover, relief worth Rs1.80 billion has been proposed under system usage charges and marketing fees, while another Rs170 million will be passed on to consumers as savings from fixed cost recovery.

This relief package has been proposed for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25. It is worth mentioning that during the second quarter of the current fiscal year, consumers received a relief of Rs56.38 billion, which led to a reduction of Rs1.90 per unit in electricity prices.

In addition, a separate petition has also been submitted to NEPRA requesting a 3 paisa per unit reduction under the fuel price adjustment for March, which will also be heard on April 29.

If NEPRA approves these proposals, consumers may see a noticeable reduction in their electricity bills in the coming months—an easing of burden that would be a welcome relief amid the current economic challenges.
