LAHORE: The prices of solar panels have faced a considerable increment after the federal government's decision to propose an 18% sales tax on imported panels; it will take effect from July 1

The decision to propose an 18% sales tax on imported panels has shaken the local markets, due to which the prices have risen and thus burdened purchasers more than ever before.

Importers are being expressed with disapproval for the increment in price by traders at Karachi’s Regal Chowk in Saddar, adding that customers were taken aback by the unexpected rise.  Some hurried to buy systems out of fear of more hikes, while others departed without buying anything.

Rate of 585 Watt Solar Panel, June 2025There has been an increment of about Rs 3,200 in the price of the 585-watt panel, making the new rate Rs 20,767, whereas previously it was Rs 17,550.  The installation of solar equipment will no doubt rise for locals in Pakistan.

The government has been requested by the traders to take back the proposal for an 18 per cent increase on imported panels.

FY Budget 2025-26: Tax on Imported Solar Panels:

The budget was shown by the Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb in the National Assembly early this week, making the overall expenditure now Rs 17.6 trillion.

The federal government suggested imposing an 18% tariff on solar panel imports in the budget.

The finance minister contended that a number of proposals are being made to rectify the sales tax system s long-standing shortcomings and make it more equitable.

He stated that an 18% tariff on solar panel imports has been suggested in order to provide a level playing field between imported and domestically produced solar panels.  He went on to say that this action will be crucial in advancing Pakistan s indigenous solar panel sector.
