Metro bus moves toward digital payment system

LAHORE (Web Desk): The Punjab government has decided to introduce a digital payment system for the Metro Bus and Orange Line.

A special meeting was held under the chairmanship of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in which a detailed review was conducted about the Transport Department and Mass Transit Authority. In the meeting, it was decided to introduce a digital payment system for the Metro Bus and Orange Line in Punjab.

The meeting was informed that the token system will be abolished in the Orange Line train and metro bus and a barcode system will be introduced through card-based payment. Fare payments will be made through credit cards, debit cards, ATM cards and mobile account apps. In the mass transit system, fares will also be paid through NFC, i.e. card tap and touch.

In Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi and Islamabad, it will be possible to pay the fare on the metro bus only through credit cards and debit cards. The token system will soon be abolished by implementing an e-payment system in the Orange Line train of Lahore. The fare on the Orange Line train of Lahore can be paid through credit cards, debit cards, payment apps. The meeting also decided to introduce a single card for the mass transit system across the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the T-Cash card for the mass transit system. A separate card will be introduced for students in the mass transit system. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also gave in-principle approval for recruitment to technical posts from grade 5 to 18 in the transport department.

The meeting agreed to introduce electric rickshaws as an alternative to motorcycle rickshaws. The Chief Minister has sought suggestions and recommendations for the electric rickshaw project. Maryam Nawaz also gave in-principle approval to organize the first-ever international transport expo in Punjab.
