LAHORE (Web Desk): The Punjab government has decided to repair and rehabilitate the dilapidated Lahore Metro Bus tracks and stations. The stations will be converted to solar energy and upgraded at a cost of billions of rupees.

According to official documents, the Punjab government has launched a major rehabilitation plan for the metro bus system. Under this initiative, 25 metro stations will be repaired and restored at a cost of Rs2.105 billion. Additionally, all stations will be converted to solar energy, which will cost Rs1.70 billion. Track restoration work will also be completed at a cost of Rs1.5 billion, while grinding and polishing of pedestrian bridges, ticketing booths, and platforms will be carried out to improve passenger facilities.

Punjab’s Transport Minister said the project has been revived on the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab. NESPAK, a government-owned engineering consultancy, was tasked with conducting the survey and preparing the cost estimates. He criticized the previous government for abandoning the public project midway, which led to serious deterioration in the metro system. He added that Rs1.5 billion has already been spent on track rehabilitation as part of early restoration efforts.

Looking to the future, the minister revealed that the government is planning to convert all metro buses to electric vehicles. This transition will support the province’s environmental goals and reduce operating costs over time, while offering commuters a cleaner, quieter travel experience.

The metro project, once considered a flagship public service, had suffered from years of neglect. The current government now aims to restore its efficiency and reliability, ensuring the system meets modern standards and continues to serve the public effectively.
