NAPIER: (Web Desk) New Zealand secured a 73-run victory over Pakistan in the first match of the three-match ODI series, taking a 1-0 lead.

Chasing a target of 345 runs set by New Zealand, the Pakistani team was bowled out for 271 runs. Usman Khan scored 39, Abdullah Shafique made 36, and Mohammad Rizwan contributed 30 runs before getting out.

Babar Azam and Salman Ali Agha formed a solid partnership but couldn’t steer the team to victory.

Babar Azam remained top-scorer with 78, while Salman Ali Agha added 58 runs. Irfan Khan and Naseem were dismissed without scoring, whereas Haris Rauf and Akif Javed managed just one run each.

Captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and elected to field first. New Zealand’s batting stumbled early, losing three wickets for 50 runs.

Batting first, the hosts posted 344 runs in their allotted overs. Will Young (1), Nick Kelly (15), and Henry Nicholls (11) fell cheaply.

For Pakistan, Irfan Khan took 3 wickets, while Haris Rauf and Akif Javed claimed 2 wickets each.

It is worth mentioning that New Zealand had previously defeated Pakistan 4-1 in the five-match T20I series.
