(Web Desk): Bangladesh votes in crucial elections with BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami locked in a close fight for power.

Bangladesh elections began nationwide with a fierce contest expected between Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, as millions head to polling stations.

Polling started at 7:30am local time and continued until 4:30pm in 299 out of 300 parliamentary constituencies. More than 127 million voters were eligible to cast their ballots, while around 50 political parties participated in the nationwide electoral process.

Candidates from major parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party, and Jatiya Party, competed for 300 parliamentary seats. To form a government, a party or alliance must win at least 151 seats.

BNP nominated Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, as its candidate for prime minister. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami presented Shafiqur Rahman as a strong contender. The National Citizen Party, linked to the Gen-Z movement that played a key role in the August 2024 political upheaval involving Sheikh Hasina, also joined Jamaat’s alliance. The Awami League did not participate due to restrictions.

Security was tightened nationwide, with army troops deployed to ensure peaceful voting. Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner said all arrangements were completed to ensure transparent, free, and fair elections.

A recent public survey predicted a very close race. The BNP-led alliance is expected to secure about 44.1 percent of votes, while the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance could gain around 43.9 percent.

The government declared February 12 a public holiday. Offices, schools, and private institutions were closed to allow voters to participate without difficulty.
