The local government says the program aims to bring new life into the quiet Tuscan region.
According to media reports, homes across several parts of Italy are already being sold for just a few thousand rupees, but this town is going a step further by paying residents instead of charging them.
Authorities in the ancient town of Radicondoli, located near Siena in Tuscany, have announced a payment of 23,000 US dollars — more than Rs6,500,000 — to anyone who decides to settle there. Once home to 3,000 residents, Radicondoli’s population has now dropped to only 966 people.
Out of its 450 houses, about 100 are currently vacant. The local council hopes that financial incentives will help attract new families. The scheme was first launched in 2023, offering cash to those who purchased and lived in empty homes, along with an additional 6,000 euros for transport and other costs.
This year, the program has been expanded to include rent support. New residents will not only receive financial aid for buying homes but also have half of their rent paid for the first two years.

Mayor of Radicondoli said that around 465,000 US dollars have been allocated to support the initiative, including help for home buyers, renters, students, and eco-friendly projects. He explained that this plan is more practical than Italy’s “one-euro house” schemes, where properties often cost 50,000 to 100,000 euros and need heavy renovation.
In this town, most homes are already in livable condition, while only a few need repairs. Rent is also extremely low — a typical house costs 400 euros per month, but with government subsidies, tenants will pay just 20 euros.
However, there are certain conditions. Anyone who buys a home must live there for at least 10 years, while those renting must stay for at least 4 years to qualify for the scheme.
Italy’s creative plan blends beauty with opportunity. By turning its ghost villages into dream destinations, the country is giving people a reason to move — and even rewarding them for it. For those seeking a peaceful life surrounded by Tuscany’s hills, this could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to start fresh and get paid for it.
