Spain had already recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv last September after a diplomatic dispute with Israel. The disagreement began when Spain banned aircraft and ships carrying weapons to Israel from using Spanish ports and airspace during Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.
Israel strongly criticized the decision at the time. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar described Spain’s actions as antisemitic, which further worsened relations between the two countries.
Spain confirmed on Tuesday that the ambassador’s post had officially been terminated. According to the Spanish Foreign Ministry, the embassy in Tel Aviv will be managed by a chargé d’affaires rather than a full ambassador for the foreseeable future.

Relations between the two countries have been under pressure since Israel launched its military assault on Gaza in October 2023. Diplomatic tensions increased further when Spain recognized a Palestinian state last year, prompting Israel to recall its own ambassador from Madrid.
The situation has become even more sensitive following the recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Earlier this month, Sa’ar accused Spain of “standing with tyrants” because it opposed the war.
Meanwhile, the regional conflict continues to expand. Iran’s military leadership warned that global oil prices could surge to $200 per barrel as attacks on ships in the Gulf and wider Middle East tensions threaten energy supplies. Iran also launched strikes against Israel and other targets in the region, showing it still can respond despite heavy US-Israeli attacks.
