London (Web Desk): Elon Musk’s Tesla enters the UK power market after securing a license to supply electricity to homes and businesses across Great Britain.

Tesla has taken a major step in expanding its energy business in Britain. The UK energy regulator Ofgem has granted Tesla Energy Ventures a license that allows the company to supply electricity to homes and businesses across the country.

This decision officially brings Tesla into the competitive British energy market, where it will compete with major power companies such as Octopus Energy and British Gas. The move comes at a time when energy prices remain a serious concern for households across the UK.

An Ofgem spokesperson said the decision was taken after a full review. The official stated, “Protecting consumers and maintaining a secure, fair energy market underpins every licensing decision we make. Following a detailed assessment, Ofgem has concluded that Tesla Energy Ventures Limited meets all statutory requirements to be licensed as an energy supplier.”

Tesla is already known in Britain for selling thousands of Powerwall home batteries and electric vehicle charging systems. The company now plans to combine these technologies with electricity supply services, which could allow homes to store and share power through what is often called a “virtual power plant.”

However, Tesla’s license currently allows it to provide electricity only. The company cannot offer gas services, meaning customers who want both gas and electricity would still need to use another supplier for gas.

The development also comes amid political tensions involving Elon Musk in the UK. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband previously criticized the billionaire and accused him of being part of efforts to influence public debate and weaken social unity. Speaking at the Labor Party conference last year, he said, “We have a message for Elon Musk: get the hell out of our politics and our country.”

While Tesla is expanding its energy business, the company is facing challenges in the UK car market. Tesla’s vehicle registrations in Britain dropped by 37 percent in February compared to the same month last year. Its market share has also slipped to 1.34 percent, placing it behind competitors such as BMW and Chinese electric car maker BYD.

Despite this decline in car sales, Tesla’s move into electricity supply could open a new business opportunity as the company continues to push its broader vision of clean and connected energy systems.
