LAHORE (Web Desk): Lahore Traffic Police begins strict crackdown on fake and fancy number plates. After a 3-day grace period, FIRs and legal action will now target violators and illegal plate sellers.

In a latest effort to enforce road discipline and make public safety better, the Lahore City Traffic Police has initiated a crackdown against vehicles having fake or fancy number plates. This campaign is led by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr Athar Waheed and is set to escalate from today (Friday). FIRs (First Information Reports) will be registered against violators under relevant legal provisions.

To ensure fair implementation, authorities had given three-day grace period to focus public awareness. During this span, traffic officers issued warnings rather than fines, gave vehicle owners time to replace fake or tampered plates. No legal action was taken until today but now this campaign is formally going to shift into strict enforcement mode as the grace period ends.

The crackdown targets not only individuals but businesses as well. This includes vehicle owners having tempered, decorative or forged plates, along with manufacturers and vendors who are involved in making or selling such number plates. Authorities have highlighted that manipulating number plates to escape e-challans is considered a crime and will now be dealt with legal prosecution.

This initiative is a part of a broader strategy across Punjab to enforce traffic safety measures. In June alone, over 60,000 fines were issued for helmet violations and 14,600 for not wearing seat-belts. The month’s total fine collection exceeded Rs120 million having Rs15 million collected from helmet offenses in Lahore alone.

CTO Dr Athar Waheed emphasized that these actions are not about revenue generation but about protecting lives of commons. Drivers are strongly urged to ensure that their vehicles must have standard number plates, wear helmets, and fasten seat belts.
